Two moose stuck in mud on Tjärnö – one was rescued

Two moose got stuck in a muddy bay during the morning.
One of the moose made it, the other didn’t.
– It was difficult to access them both by land and boat. In the end, they chose to try by land and managed to get the moose that was closest, says Ida Luther Wallin, rescue manager in Strömstad municipality.

The alarm came at half past seven on Tuesday morning.

The two moose had gone down into a bay on Tjärnö south of Strömstad, but the ground nearby is also sunken, which made the rescue work difficult.

When the two moose, probably two calves, were discovered, they had already sunk up to their necks in the mud.

One was euthanized

The moose drama led to a major rescue effort, local media reports. A few hours later, the larger of the moose had been rescued from the mud. However, the life of the second calf could not be saved.

– The moose that was further out, a smaller individual, was however forced to be euthanized after it was judged that it would not survive.
