With 52 percent of the vote, Erdogan (AKP) won the election against opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglus (CHP). Despite the opposition’s progress, it is ultimately Erdogan’s political focus that carries the most weight among voters.
– The issues that Erdogan has brought forward during the election campaign – where he talks about strong leadership and claims to protect the country’s conservative values and Muslim rights – trump the bad economy that has characterized Turkey in recent years, says Thorén.
But getting the economy right will still be one of the biggest challenges the president faces.
