James Gunn defends the move and his explanation is perfect

One of the most iconic Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 characters is Cosmo the space dog. When the character first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, the dog was still a male. Also in the comics the character is male. Some people can’t believe that Cosmo is now female in part 3 of the Marvel series. Director James Gunn explained his decision to change genders perfectly online.

Taking to Twitter, the director responded to criticism that changing Cosmo’s gender doesn’t make sense compared to the comics. Gunn explains that he based the character on the real-life Laika. This is one Russian dog who was the first creature to be transported into space. He also argues that many other characters have also been completely changed:

I’d rather honor the real dog that died in space. Without Laika, there would be no Cosmo. By the way, I turned Mantis, Drax, High Evo and others from humans into aliens, which seems like a bigger change. Why does it upset you so much?
