The Riksdag has now voted to remove the permit requirement for dancing. The law was introduced in 1956 to stop “dance floor misery” and has made it illegal to spontaneously dance in nightclubs ever since.
On July 1, it is again free in Sweden to dance in the pub – as long as the activity is reported to the police. Registration is free of charge and can be done orally.
In the past, pubs and nightclubs have had to apply for permission in advance to organize dancing. It is therefore the permit requirement that is abolished after the change in the law, which comes into force on 1 July this year.
However, a permit is still required to organize a dance performance in streets and squares.
