Destiny 2 is changing a working system after 6 years and players are simply asking, “Why?”

Season 21 is just around the corner and with it the upcoming changes in Destiny 2. One of them was only recently revealed and it causes many fans to shrug their shoulders. We show you what Bungie has planned this time and why players are confused.

What is Bungie up to? In the latest Destiny 2 TWAB, the developers have again revealed a lot of information about Season 21. From artifacts to new Strang Warden toys.

One upcoming change, however, is causing many Guardians to shrug their shoulders, as the shields many players are familiar with from different opponents will be changed to a new, unified system. They will be adjusted to look the same and help color blind players see and distinguish them better.

While the idea behind it is cool, the actual change in the game looks horrific. We show you what will change.

“It feels like a step backwards and not like progress”

What will be changed? Anyone who has been playing Destiny 2 since 2017 certainly knows the different types of shields that opponents have. For example, Vex have a cylindrical grid around them that is visually distinct from other enemies.

That will change now, because with Season 21 all shields will be unified. To show how big the difference is, we include two videos with comparisons:

The shields will soon all be oval and 2D-like. In addition, they are “sucked up” when you stop trying to break the shields.

Bungie justified the change by saying that the shields had to be constantly improved and adjusted for each DLC and season. The change is intended to make future adjustments easier. In addition, the new shields should help color-blind fans to better differentiate and visualize shields.

What are the players saying? Most of the players are very confused about the change, because they don’t know why Bungie is changing a working and above all immersive system in such a way. In fact, they see it more as a limitation, since the new 2D rendering shields could overlap and confuse many players. Users therefore think:

  • “I think I understand what you (Bungie) all wanted, but this feels like a step backwards and not forward. I don’t know who thought the enemy shields really needed a visual change, but they were fine as they are,” says Reksrat.
  • “The new shields look a lot worse. Because they’re 2D sprites, they don’t emit light that reflects off the enemy and the environment. And when all factions are the same, they are stripped of their identity,” adds BluS Gaming.
  • “The old shield design actually matched what you were fighting and felt immersive. […] The only change you (Bungie) had to make was that the shield had to be visible at all times until it burst,” says Reborn Insanity.
  • What do you think of the shield change? Do you think the change will help you see shields better now? Let’s find out in the comments!
