Elyas M’Barek’s new film is the opposite of Fack ju Göhte – and could make him internationally famous

Film festivals not only show films and send stars down the red carpet in dramatic outfits. Behind the scenes, filmmakers are also looking for sponsors and partners for upcoming projects. One of these projects that will be discussed at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023: Night and Day, a “unromantic comedy” with Elyas M’Barek.

That’s what Elyas M’Barek’s new film Night and Day is supposed to be about

As the industry magazine Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned, Night and Day is an adaptation of the eponymous film novel by Virginia Woolf, published in 1919. Tina Gharavi will direct the German-British co-production Night and Day. The female lead is played by Haley Bennett, who already proved in Swallow that she can do female revolution – albeit with dramatic consequences. Elyas M’Barek plays the male lead as the central love interest.

The story follows Katharine (Haley Bennett), an astronomer who is engaged to a man she doesn’t love and generally doesn’t want to reconcile her role as an early 20th-century woman. An affront to the patriarchal London upper class, from which the young woman comes. However, when she meets aspiring lawyer Ralph (Elyas M’Barek), Katharine is intrigued. And has to deal with conflicting feelings between emancipation in the times of the suffragette movement, her own ambition and burgeoning desire.

For this project, M’Barek will not only draw on his extensive experience as a bulky charmer in German comedies, but will also have to face a completely new challenge: playing an English-speaking leading role that could make him (more) internationally known.

In Liebesdings, too, Elyas M’Barek falls in love with a woman who doesn’t really want to be in love:

Ahead of Night and Day, M’Barek returns to cinemas for a Fack ju Göhte spinoff

Nothing is really ready to say when it comes to the film adaptation of the novel. According to the Hollywood Reporter, WestEnd Films is looking for buyers for the project at the Cannes Film Festival. If they are successful, production could start as early as summer 2023.

However, it is certain that fans will see Elyas M’Barek again in German cinemas next year. As Constantin Film announced in March 2023, the actor will have a guest appearance in Chantal in the Fairytale Land – an offshoot of the Fack ju Göhte series. Bora Dagtekin is again in charge of directing and writing the script, while Jella Haase once again plays the role of Chantal Ackermann.

Chantal in Wonderland will hit theaters in 2024. That M’Barek for this once again slips into the role of teacher-against-will Zeki Müllerseems obvious, but has not yet been officially confirmed.
