The war in Ukraine was not unexpectedly on the agenda when the leaders of the world’s seven largest democracies met in Hiroshima, Japan, on Saturday.
In a joint statement, the G7 group announced that they are seeking “constructive and stable relations” with Beijing and that they are not looking to harm or hinder the country’s economic development, reports Reuters.
“We are prepared to create constructive and stable relations with China, and recognize the importance of sincere cooperation where we can raise our issues directly with China,” the message says.
The statement also emphasized the importance of preserving “peace and stability” in the Taiwan Strait area in order to maintain global security.
Zelensky in place
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also arrived to be present in Hiroshima. During the morning, Swedish time, he had, among other things, a meeting with the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Later, he is expected to meet, among other things, leaders of Brazil and India – two countries that have not yet distanced themselves from Russia and were invited to participate as guests during the weekend.
Regular participating countries are France, Italy, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and the United States.
