The state of Nebraska bans abortion after 12 weeks

For the laws to take effect, Nebraska’s Republican governor, Jim Pillen, must give his approval, which he is expected to do.

State Republicans lost a vote last month on a proposal to ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. This after a single Republican representative dropped his vote.

That they have now voted through a ban after 12 weeks is described as a compromise by Republicans, but as an “extreme” decision by Democrats, writes The Hill.

Following the example of other states

The Republicans have justified the ban on gender-affirming care for minors by saying that the children are prevented from making decisions that they regret later in life. Opponents have described the law as transphobic, saying it restricts the freedom of children and parents and puts patients’ lives at risk.

If the governor signs the bill, Nebraska will become the 19th state to ban sex-affirming care for minors and the 20th to restrict abortion rights.
