FRENCH PATENT SUBJECT. The French test will inaugurate, Monday, June 26, the 2023 college patent. Dictation, grammar and writing… Find the probable subjects of the general and professional patents, as well as the subjects and corrected of the previous tests.
[Mis à jour le 19 mai 2023 à 12h41] The 2023 college certificate tests are fast approaching! They will start on Monday June 26 with French, which will take place in the morning and will be, as usual, in two parts. There will first be a first part dedicated to grammar, written comprehension and dictation between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., then a second on writing between 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. What types of subjects should we expect on D-Day?
It is impossible to establish a precise list of texts or works that could constitute the French test for the 2023 patent, because there is no common corpus for all college students, whether they study in a professional or general series. . THE Ministry of Education gives teachers proposals for works for each theme studied during the year, but they are not compulsory. As a reminder, the French program in 3e revolves around four main themes and one complementary theme. Find them below, with examples of works for each theme.
The French program in 3e revolves around four main themes and one complementary theme. The works on which the French test for the 2023 college patent will be based will therefore necessarily fall into one of these themes. Find a short presentation of these, as well as examples of works that the Ministry of Education recommends that teachers have their students study for each of them. Please note, however, that these are only recommendations, and that there is therefore no certainty that it will be on these works that the college students will work on June 26th.
- Looking for yourself, building yourself (Telling yourself, representing yourself) : this theme of the French program in 3e is devoted to the study of the autobiographical genre, to tell stories or to tell the world around us. If the French test for the 2023 patent relates to this theme, the pupils could therefore be led to work on an autobiographical text, taken for example from the book Childhood by Nathalie Sarraute or even The promise of dawn by Romain Gary.
- Living in society, participating in society (Denouncing the shortcomings of society) : this theme of the French program in 3e is devoted to the study of the satirical genre and its different forms in literature, used as a weapon to criticize the balance of power in society or to disseminate information. If the French test for the 2023 patent relates to this theme, the students could therefore be led to work on a satirical story. Last year, the French test for the general series focused on one of the Fables of Aesop, entitled “The Mosquito and the Lion”. Among the examples of satirical stories that could drop this year are the must-haves Fables of La Fontaine, or even philosophical tales like Animal Farm by George Orwell.
- Looking at the world, inventing worlds (Poetic visions of the world) : this theme of the French program in 3e is devoted to the study of the poetic genre, to the way in which a poet translates his vision of the world through poetry. If the French test for the 2023 patent relates to this theme, the students could therefore be required to work on a poem, for example “Ma Bohême” by Arthur Rimbaud or even “L’Albatros” by Charles Baudelaire.
- Acting on the world (Acting in the city: individual and power) : this theme of the French program in 3e is devoted to the study of literary works which provide a fictionalized look at major historical upheavals, in particular the two world wars. If the French test for the 2023 patent relates to this theme, the pupils could therefore be led to work on a work which relates to a major historical event, such as Antigone by Jean Anouilh or journey to the Edge of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine.
- Scientific progress and dreams : this is the complementary theme of the French program in 3e. It is devoted to the study of literary works that provide an optimistic or, on the contrary, pessimistic view of scientific advances, in particular through the figure of the scientist. If the French test for the 2023 patent relates to this theme, the pupils could therefore be led to work on a work of anticipation, such as 1984 by George Orwell, or more classic science fiction novels like The Time Machine by HG Wells.
The French patent 2022 test took place on June 30, and our partner Studyrama published a corrected to specify the outline of the answers that had to be given and the references to be called in the copy. Find below corrections made by teachers:
French subjects in the general series for the 2022 patent
The full French subject of the 2022 patent for the general series was provided to us by our partner Studyrama. From dictation to writing exercises and grammar questions, the entire subject of the 2022 French patent test is available. The candidates worked on the text “The mosquito and the lion”, taken from Fables of Aesop, and wondered about the impact of literary and artistic works on readers and their behavior.
French subjects in pro series at patent 2022
Candidates for the DNB 2022 in the pro series also took their French test on June 30, but with a specific subject. They also lent themselves to the exercise of dictation, on an extract from the novel number six by Véronique Olmi. The rest of the test also focused on comprehension and grammar, with a series of questions on the same text. Consult the subject of the French patent 2022 in the corresponding pro series below:
Dictation is one of the keys to the French college certificate test. Here is the French dictation of the 2022 edition of the DNB for the general series. As a reminder, during the patent, the dictation is worth 10 points and the students have 10 minutes to complete it. The text for the 2022 edition was taken from Fables of Aesop (7th-6th century BC)
“The mosquito and the lion
A mosquito approached a lion and said to him: “I am not afraid of you, and you are not more powerful than me. If you want, I will even provoke you into battle”. And, sounding its trunk, the mosquito swooped down on him, biting the hairless muzzle around the nostrils. As for the lion, he tore himself with his own claws, until he gave up the fight. The mosquito, having vanquished the lion, sounded its trumpet, intoned a song of victory, and took flight. But he got entangled in a spider’s web: while she devoured him, he lamented being killed by a common animal, a spider, he who had fought the most powerful animals.
According to Aesop, Fables, 7th-6th century BC.
Candidates for the DNB 2022 in the professional path were also entitled to their dictation on another text of course. Their text was taken from number six by Véronique Olmi, a work from 2002.
“Number Six”
I am in the garden with you. You put on your big blue apron and your straw hat too. Anyone other than you would look ridiculous. You are the master. It’s evening and it’s fall. It is soft. You burn dead leaves. I don’t take my eyes off you. You don’t look at me. You feed the heap, thick, shifting; the leaves do not flame, rather they suffocate, the smoke is dense, sour. You have a big rake and decided gestures. You are strong, it is you who orders nature, the garden does not obey you.
According to Véronique Olmi, 2002
During the written French test for the secondary school certificate, pupils from mainland France have three hours to prove themselves. This consists first of a part “grammar and linguistic skills – comprehension and skills of interpretation and dictation”, from 9 am to 10.30 am. It is, after a dictation, to carry out the explanation of an extract of literary text and exercises of grammar and rewriting. After a short break, follows a second part dedicated to writing, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The first part, assessed on 50 points, is based on a literary text sometimes accompanied by an image and consists of answering a series of questions on grammar, language comprehension and interpretation. Twenty minutes are dedicated to dictation, scored out of 10 points, of approximately 600 characters for students in the general series and 400 characters for the professional series. The order of the following questions, out of 40 points, is not insignificant: the first are rather short and address specific points of grammar while the following call for more developed and written answers based on quotations from the excerpt from the text provided to study.
After a short break of fifteen minutes, the students find their copy for the last part of the test: writing on a subject of invention or reflection of their choice, and on which the last 50 points are played.
At the patent, the value of each test is not calculated on the basis of a coefficient, but with a counting of points. As a reminder, you can obtain a maximum of 800 points during the patent. You need a minimum of 400 points out of 800 to pass. Then, when you collect more points, you can get mentions: you need at least 480 for the mention fairly well, at least 560 for the mention well, and 640 for the mention very well. The French test can pay up to 100 dots, it is therefore very important.
The results of the 2023 patent will be revealed at the beginning of July, on dates differing slightly according to the academies. It is to be expected that the results of the Brevet des collèges will be communicated between Friday July 7 and Tuesday July 11, 2023. And after the results, it’s time to celebrate the students who obtained the best marks! A republican patent graduation ceremony is organized at each start of the school year for the winners in their college. The academies, in connection with the educational establishments and the elected officials of the territory – mayors, departmental councilors, etc. – organize, each year, an official presentation of the diplomas obtained the previous year.
According to the official website of National Education, this ceremony “brings together the educational community and elected officials around the students who complete their common school career”. Its usefulness is to “state the essential role of the school in the Republic and to congratulate the pupils who have obtained their first diploma”. National Education specifies that this makes it possible to erect “models of success”.
