The German Nico Denz (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the 12th stage of the Tour of Italy by winning the sprint, this Thursday, May 18 in Rivoli. He beat Latvian Toms Skujins and Australian Sebastian Berwick in the final meters to claim the best victory of his career at 29, when he was initially not supposed to join the breakaway. “I was not designated in the team to go in the breakaway, it had to be Patrick Konrad and Bob Jungels. But Bob wasn’t feeling too good and I was given the green light,” he explained. Briton Geraint Thomas, who arrived with the other favorites more than eight minutes behind the winner, quietly kept his pink leader’s jersey. Things should nevertheless get tougher from the 13th stage, the first big mountain stage with three first category passes up to Crans Montana.
