“The investigation into the fire is ongoing and police have not ruled out additional, more serious charges linked to the deaths at the scene,” reads a press release from the national police authority.
It also states that the police currently do not consider it necessary to search for additional suspects. The suspect was arrested on Thursday afternoon, local time.
The fire in the Loafers Lodge hostel broke out shortly after midnight on Tuesday night. Flames then burst out of the four-story building and many needed help to get out. There is information that a couple of hours earlier there had been a fire in a sofa on the premises, but the authorities were not alerted to it.
At least six people died in the fire and on Thursday another search was underway for remains in the premises. About ten people are still missing.
“We expect to be able to retrieve two of the dead today and two tomorrow,” reads a written message from police chief Dion Bennett.
“The crime scene investigation is expected to take several days.”
The hostel has 92 rooms, but no tourists seem to have stayed there. It was currently a kind of temporary accommodation for, among other things, shift workers, but also the less fortunate and former inmates.
The suspect will be formally charged with the crime before a court on Friday.
