After his death in 2014, due to acute leukemia, he got his own cycling race: the Gerard Vianen Classic, which also raises money for the Daniel den Hoed Fund. “Those people do a lot of research into cancer,” explains Van Oostrum. “And they also cycle along, by the way.” The cyclists ride three distances today, 35, 65 and 100 kilometers. They can also choose whether they want to do a fast or a fun route. “The latter is a bit more about the dikes.”
