The king is safely on the throne – and so is Crown Princess Victoria, what is suffering.
Support for Sweden to be a republic has not been this low in over 20 years.
The Som institute’s latest survey shows that trust in the royal family continues to be at a relatively stable level. So also for King Carl XVI Gustaf, who celebrates 50 years on the throne this year.
Last year, 54 percent answered that the monarchy should be kept, while 20 percent wanted to abolish it. At the same time, there are fewer than in a long time who are open to changing the state.
When asked if Sweden should introduce a republic with a popularly elected president, only 11 percent were positive to the proposal. Support for the Republic has not been this low since 2001.
Merit of the Crown Princess
An explanation can possibly be attributed to the Crown Princess. Namely, Victoria is the most popular public figure ever measured in the survey with +28 on a scale that goes from -50 to +50.
With that, she beats Barack Obama and Jens Stoltenberg, who previously ranked high on the Swedes’ list.
“Even the people who believe that the monarchy should be abolished generally have a positive image of the crown princess, something that must provide good conditions for a future accession to the throne,” says Ulrika Andersson, researcher at the SOM institute and responsible for the study, in a comment.
