Bobi – the world’s oldest dog – turns 31. A big party with over 100 people and a dance was held this weekend for the dog, who is only a few years younger than his master.

The Portuguese dog Bobi has turned 31. The birthday fell on Thursday and on Saturday he was celebrated with a big party – in the traditional Portuguese spirit, says owner Leonel Costa in a statement from the Guinness Book of Records, which is quoted by CNN, among others. Over 100 people turned up for the festivities, which also featured dance performances.

Bobi, a Portuguese sheepdog of the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, was named the world’s oldest dog by the Guinness Book of Records in February this year. And the uproar has been great.

“We’ve had a lot of journalists and people from all over the world come to take a picture of Bobi,” says Costa and continues:

“It wasn’t easy for him.”

It also led to concerns that it would be too much for the old man and he was recently taken in for a health check – and found to be in good health. However, he has trouble walking and impaired vision due to his advanced age.

The secret behind the respectable age, says Costa, is the “calm, peaceful environment” in which Bobi lives in the countryside of southern Portugal.

Costa himself was only eight years old when Bobi joined the family.

“Bobi is special, because if you look at him, it’s like remembering the people who were part of our family but unfortunately no longer exist, like my father, my brother and my grandparents who have already left us.”
