The Carolina Hurricanes are the first team to secure their spot in the NHL playoffs among the top four. Carolina advanced to the Eastern Conference finals by beating the New Jersey Devils 3–2 in overtime. Thus, Carolina continues with a 4–1 win.
The match series started sovereignly under Carolina’s control. The Hurricanes knocked out the Devils pack at home first 5–1 and then 6–1. After that, it was the Devils’ turn to take a crushing victory, 8–4. The Hurricanes quickly recovered from the opening win in New Jersey and took a 6-1 away victory.
Now, the fifth game played on Carolina’s home ice saw the only even game of the series in terms of goals.
The opening set was played on 15.06, when Dawson Mercer gave the Devils the lead from the back post by Timo Meier from namu pass.
Carolina’s first-team defenseman Jacco Slavin equalized right at the beginning of the second period. Slavin’s line drive bounced wildly By Akira Schmid from between the legs to the net. The hit was initially flagged as having made a mask in front of the goal Jesperi Kotkaniemi to names.
In time 27:15, Meier took the Devils ahead again with superiority, while Kotkaniemi sat outside the game due to the violence he took. The Devils dominated the second period strongly, but the Carolina keeper Frederik Andersen kept his team just a goal away.
Carolina had scored in the first minute of the set, and also scored in the last, when the second member of the number one pair Brent Burns scored 2–2. Again, a shot that goalkeeper Schmid, caught in his mask, didn’t see.
There were no goals in the third period. The overtime had been played at 5:36, when the Devils defender Jonas Siegenthaler carelessly unloaded the puck from his own area directly into the stands, resulting in a suspension for delaying the game.
With superiority, the Hurricanes built the winning goal. Defender Shayne Gostisbehere passed to Kotkaniemi, whose shot by the Swedish striker Jesper Fast directed to the network.
– I’m not used to being there (in front of the goal with the upper hand). I took advantage of the opportunity. I was just in front of the goal. I didn’t try to do too much, I just tried to be in front of the goalkeeper’s field of vision, and I was lucky, acknowledged Fast with his winning goal.
Finnish forward of the New Jersey Devils Erik Haula got playing time 14:56. The plus-minus statistic became -1. In total, Haula played 12 matches in the playoffs with a score of 4+2. The Devils’ number one star in the playoffs was Jack Hughes power 6+5.
Hughes, the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, played with an injury. Devils coach Lindy Ruff said on Sportsnet (switch to another service)that he didn’t think Hughes would play anymore because of an upper body injury.
– The fact that he put on his skates and played says a lot about his character. The future is bright, Ruff praised.
Hurricanes win in the 1st round of the playoffs over the New York Islanders in six games. Kotkaniemi got one assist point in those matches. Instead, in the Devils series, Kotkaniemi collected 3+2 performances.
Sebastian Aho didn’t collect power in the decisive game against the Devils, but continues as Carolina’s top scorer in the playoffs with 5+5 power. Martinook has powers 3+7.
Carolina Jesse Puljujärvi didn’t make the lineup for the last couple of Devils games. Teuvo Teräväinen is still sidelined with a broken hand, although he has already been seen training on the ice.
Carolina’s Finnish goalkeeper Antti Raanta had recovered from illness to be a backup guard. However, Danish goalkeeper Andersen has won all five playoff games after recovering from his injury.
The last time Carolina reached the conference finals was in spring 2019, when it lost in four straight games to Boston. Now the Florida Panthers or the Toronto Maple Leafs are coming up, Florida leads the series 3–1.
The last time Carolina played in the Stanley Cup finals was in 2006, when they beat the Edmonton Oilers 4–3 and celebrated the championship.
In addition to Teräväinen, Carolina’s forwards are also sidelined Andrei Svetshnikov and Max Pacioretty. The head coach of the team Rod Brind’Amour brought up the injury situation after securing the next place.
– It cannot be underestimated. I don’t know how many teams could have an entire top line on the sidelines and still be able to progress like we did. That says a lot about the guys who are now getting their due. I’m just so proud of the guys, Brind’Amour beamed.
– I’m just an old guy who is behind the bench watching this and I enjoy how hard everyone works together, continued the head coach, who in 2006 lifted the Stanley Cup as captain of the Hurricanes.
