But those of you who think it’s just a matter of jumping on the flatbed and cheering, think again – there are a lot of rules you need to know in order to travel on the flatbed.

The Swedish Transport Agency’s rules for riding student vans:

  • You may only take passengers in such a number and place them in such a way that no danger can arise.
  • There must be sturdy guardrails or equivalent devices of sufficient height to prevent passengers from falling off. These should be at least 110 cm high. Seats or benches must be fixed.
  • Passenger spaces must not have dangerous irregularities, protruding parts or sharp edges that could increase the risk of injury to passengers.
  • The passengers must be able to contact the driver directly through a reliable communication system in case something happens. If a mobile phone is used, the call must be connected during the entire journey.
  • The vehicle may not drive faster than 20 km per hour and may only be driven on roads where the speed limit is a maximum of 70 km per hour.
  • The driver must be 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license for two years. If a tractor with a trailer is to be driven in a similar context, the driver must at least have authorization B and have had that authorization for two years.
  • When traveling on a trailer, the connection to the towing vehicle must be secure. You may only have one trailer and it must be so stable that it does not risk tipping over.
