New charges for woman accused of doula fraud

A Brantford woman facing multiple charges involving doulas remains in custody and is now facing additional charges.

Kaitlyn Braun, 24, has 52 charges laid against her in Ontario Court.

She is accused of four counts of sexual assault.

She also faces 17 charges each of criminal harassment and false pretenses, along with seven counts each of fraud under $5,000 and committing and indecent act.

Brantford Police say the charges now relate to 17 alleged victims.

She was arrested on March 13 after Brantford Police heard from multiple people who said they were victims of a birthing scam.

Braun has made about a dozen video appearances in Brantford’s Ontario Court but has not yet received bail.

The doulas – who are trained to help coach women through the birthing process – began communicating with each other on TikTok early this year, warning each other about a woman who they alleged was generating support through lies.

Some reported they dedicated days of time to the woman and were traumatized by their experiences, as at least one doula said she was led to believe the woman she was communicating with later died in childbirth.

One doula said her alleged client solicited personal touching.

Braun’s arrest generated a flood of calls and emails to a Brantford Police investigator.
