Costco may be playing it coy about its impending store in Brantford but the city made it official with a $33.5 million building permit issued to the popular big box store at the end of March.
The permit, issued on March 31, is for a new Costco warehouse at Lynden Park Mall, 84 Lynden Road.
While Mayor Kevin Davis and city councilors were welcoming the store at that time, Costco continued to demur about any plans for Brantford, saying it wasn’t ready to discuss an official deal.
A spokesperson said new locations would be posted on the company website when Costco is ready to make any announcements.
The only Ontario location posted on Costca.ca this week is one for South London, which opened at the end of March, as scheduled.
Other new stores on the list are scheduled up until June.
City building permits are traditionally given around the time – or even slightly after – work begins on a project.
Last month, Davis said the site work, involving grading, drainage, sewers, roads, water and electrical hookups, still had to be completed but construction could begin as early as the fall.
Plans by the Ministry of Transportation call for widening the off-ramp from Highway 403 at Wayne Gretzky Parkway to provide two north turning lanes toward the mall.
count. Richard Carpenter previously said the “When’s Costco coming?” question has been the most frequent ask from residents in years.
A Costco spokesperson did not respond to questions from The Expositor by deadline.
