In the middle of a raging war, Russia celebrates “Victory Day” in Moscow.
In a speech, Putin pays tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to fight Nazism – and again blames the “special operation” in Ukraine on his opponents.
– Ukraine is suffering because of the West, says Putin.
May 9 is “Victory Day” in Russia. During the day, large military parades are held and celebrations are held to mark the victory in the Second World War. “Victory Day” is seen as one of the country’s most important holidays.
On Tuesday morning, Putin gave a speech, partly to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to fight the Nazis during World War II, and partly to pay tribute to those who are fighting the Nazis in Ukraine today.
“The Western countries crushed security”
Putin says that it is the Western countries that are the reason why Russia’s “special operation” was necessary.
– We strive for peace and freedom. The western countries shattered the security and peace we had. They are the reason Ukraine is suffering today. They have manipulated Ukraine, Putin says in his speech and addresses the soldiers who are currently fighting in Ukraine.
– Defending our country is the most important thing. We are proud of soldiers who are part of the special operation. Those who save the wounded. There is nothing more important than the work you do there. You are our future. You defend our homeland. You defend Russia.
After the president’s speech, the Russian national anthem was sung in Red Square, which was followed by salutes and a parade. Among others, the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, is present.
