Stealing a traffic sign is dangerous and can result in deadly consequences, says the head of the Norfolk OPP.
“Road signs, such as stop signs, are there for the safety of the motoring public, passengers, and pedestrians,” Insp. Jennifer Neamtz, Norfolk’s interim detachment commander, said in a media release “Damaging, removing or stealing road signs can have deadly consequences.
“This is not a game; this type of activity puts everyone at risk and jeopardizes the safety of innocent in people in all our communities.”
Neamtz made the comments after a stop sign and a warning sign were removed from a Jackson Side Road location in the Courtland area. Norfolk OPP are investigating after receiving a report of the theft just before 2 am May 7.
Traffic signs provide important information about the law, warn motorists about dangerous conditions and help them find their way. They are especially important to those motorists traveling through an unfamiliar community, Neamtz said.
Signs use different symbols, colors and shapes for easy identification in order to keep everyone alert, aware and safe.
