The Swedish team Chelsea beat Everton 7-0 on Sunday evening. Zecira Musovic, Magdalena Eriksson and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd all played the entire match in a victory that was necessary for the London side to continue to have the matter in their own hands ahead of the Super League’s closing rounds.
Because Chelsea probably can’t afford to drop any points – at least not given Manchester United’s form curve.
Formed in 2018
Over the years, United has been a major power on the men’s side, while the women’s team was formed as recently as 2018. Not until 2020 did the ladies make their first season in the top league Super League.
But already this year, the big lift has come, and with two games left to play – at home against Manchester City and away against Liverpool – they still have the chance to win the league for the first time.
Leah Galton gave the team the lead against Tottenham when she capitalized on a poor back pass in the 32nd minute. Alessia Russo thundered in for 2–0 on the volley three minutes later and Nikita Parris made it 3–0 from close range early in the second half.
London teams chase
United top the Super League on 50 points, four ahead of Chelsea, who however have four games to play. Among Chelsea’s remaining games, the tough derby against Arsenal, who also have a chance at the title (41 points, four games to go), stands out.
Manchester City’s title hopes basically vanished on Sunday. An unexpected 1-2 loss away to Liverpool means that Filippa Angeldahl’s team are six points up on local rivals United with two games to go.
Next weekend, neither United nor Chelsea will have the league on their minds. Then the teams meet in the FA Cup final in front of a packed Wembley.
