Spring is late but soon it will be here

Many are longing for spring, which is unusually late this year, says TV4’s meteorologist Peter Kondrup.
But as early as next week, we can count on higher temperatures.
– Then you will be happy, says Peter Kondrup.

There is probably no season that is as loved as spring – and longed for after a long dark winter. Some associate spring with the chirping of birds and others with bluebells and tussilago – things that can be difficult to measure. And almost every year in April, we ask ourselves whether spring is unusually late this year.

The arrival of spring is a process and although there are a number of typical spring signs, it is difficult to define meteorological spring – there is no accepted international standard.

The meteorological definition of spring

One definition is that the daily average temperature must be rising and above 0 °C but below 10 °C and another condition is that the start of spring must not take place before February 15.

We have had a few years of late springs but the general trend is that the spring is getting warmer and warmer. Just this year, however, SMHI has established that spring is actually late – something that is also confirmed by TV4’s meteorologist Peter Kondrup.

– Temperatures have been below normal in almost the entire country, and in addition, it is still winter in several places in the northern parts of Sweden, he says.

Spring is coming

But it is far from record cold this year. The lowest temperature so far in May is minus 14 degrees, while the cold record for the month of May is as low as minus 24 degrees.

Even though we have an unusually late spring, the temperature will rise considerably and it will be well over double digits already next week.

– So then we start talking spring for real and not just meteorological spring, says Peter Kondrup.
