Napoli has secured the Italian football championship five rounds before the decision.
Napoli sealed their Serie A soccer title late Thursday night. A 1-1 away draw as a guest of Udinese was enough for Napoli, who lead the league by far, for the first championship in the club’s history in 33 years.
Napoli had won the previous Italian championships in 1990 and 1987. At that time, the team was captained by the legendary Diego Maradona.
The league’s goal scorer Victor Osimhen brought Napoli to 1–1 in the second half in the 52nd minute. Sandi Lovric had taken Udinese into the lead at the beginning of the match.
Napoli took an unattainable league lead with a 16-point difference over second-placed Lazio. There are five more rounds of games to be played in Serie A.
11,000 Napoli supporters followed the deciding match at the Udine stadium in northern Italy and 5,000 outside the stadium. In addition, more than 50,000 Napoli fans cheered for themselves on the jumbo screen at the Diego Armando Maradona home stadium.
A surprise dominance that lasted until the end
Napoli have dominated Serie A all season and were unbeaten in the league until Inter won it in January.
Initially, Napoli was not even considered a title candidate before the season, as the team had lost its captain Lorenzo Insigne and key players by Dries Mertens and Kalidou Koulibaly.
But over the course of the season, Victor Osimhenis grew into the league’s most dangerous striker, and a ball shooter Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pulled off a sensational season at the same time replacing Insigne on the left wing.
The title also brings glory to Napoli’s innovative coaching wizard For Luciano Spallettiwho had previously managed Roma and Inter and won two Russian championships for Zenit St. Petersburg.
