After the Megxit drama – bright future for King Charles

Britain has been through a series of crises in recent years: Brexit, government chaos and runaway inflation, to name a few.

But the crisis that has perhaps shaken the British monarchy the most is the so-called Megxit drama. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have left the country and moved to the United States, making serious allegations against the royal family. According to the prince couple, the monarchy is permeated by racist structures and has difficulty adapting to a changing society.

More popular over time

But Angela Levin, royal commentator, believes that the criticism is partly unfair. She believes that Charles has wanted to implement changes, but did not dare while Queen Elizabeth II was still alive.

According to Angela Levin, Charles has also become more popular over time and is well placed to succeed as a monarch:

– He is fit for his age and is both physically and mentally strong. He has always been careful to keep fit and goes for regular long walks, she tells the Foreign Office.

Works close to Prince William

King Charles also works closely with his son Prince William, who thus becomes a young and important voice for the British monarchy, says Angela Levin:

– Charles has a stable family behind him. Both he and William have been hurt by Harry, so they have bonded a bit around it and become close to each other.

SVT’s foreign reporter Anna-Maja Persson believes, however, that the British royal house still faces a series of challenges:

– There is a lot of criticism. Among other things, revelations about a document that links the British royal family with the slave trade, where an investigation is to be launched. King Charles has come out and welcomed the inquiry, but there is a long way to go.

It simply remains to be seen how well Charles will be received by the British population and whether he will be able to hold the British monarchy together as well as his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
