Sylvester Stallone banger with one of the most dangerous stunts ever that cost $1 million

Sylvester Stallone banger with one of the most dangerous stunts

Today there is an action hit from the 90s on TV that actually shoots its powder right at the beginning. However, this happens with such a complex and impressive stunt that you can hardly be angry with Rambo star Sylvester Stallone.

  • Cliffhanger (1993) is on TV today at 10:40 p.m. on kabel eins.
  • You can catch up on the film on Amazon * and other providers.
  • The plot of Cliffhanger in brief

Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone) is considered the best rescuer in the Rocky Mountains, but after a tragic accident, he vowed never to set foot in the mountains again. He even gave up his job as head of the rescue team. More than a year has passed since then, when suddenly a plane crashed in the mountains. The survivors must be rescued as soon as possible. For Walker, it’s a matter of honor. He decides to attempt the climb again and leave his trauma behind. But what awaits Walker at the summit puts him to the test.

Most Daring Stunt In Action Movie Swallowed $1 Million (And Went Wrong)

Cliffhanger is set in the mountains, but the action film’s most daring stunt takes place entirely over the mountaintops and Sylvester Stallone doesn’t take part in it. At the beginning of the film, the villain (John Lithgow) and his gang rob a plane carrying gold. The valuable cargo is to be loaded into a smaller machine in flight. So a leash is attached between the two companions and a gang member climbs over. Instead of filming everything in the safety of a studio, the idea was really implemented above the clouds.

Stuntman Simon Crane was suspended between two flyers by a weighted line. The challenges were manifold:

  • The stunt took place at an altitude of 4,500 meters.
  • The planes both had to pick up the same speed (around 240 kilometers/hour). Had they flown faster, Crane might have been torn apart by the wind.
  • The low temperature was minus 30 degrees.
  • The oxygen concentration at this altitude was much lower, making it difficult to breathe.
  • The crew on the smaller plane had to grab the line to pull him into the cabin.
  • Equipped with two safety parachutes and a prosthetic mask to protect against the cold, the stuntman set off. The campaign, which cost around 1 million dollars at the time, went wrong. Because the team in the smaller plane didn’t manage to get hold of Crane. He had to cut the connection and trust his parachute. You can also see that in the finished film, in which there is a cut shortly before the cabin door is reached.

The documentary Hollywood’s Greatest Stunts has footage of Crane trying to get on the plane:

Nevertheless, the stunt in Cliffhanger was successful. Simon Crane received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the “most dangerous stunt ever performed in the air” (via Far Out Magazine).

That being said, Cliffhanger features expertly directed Stallone action. The film by Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin can’t top the strong beginning (from the trauma of the Stallone character to the air heist) in the rest of the run.
