A Russian freight train has derailed in the Russian region of Bryansk after an explosive device detonated on the track, governor Aleksander Bogomaz said. There are no reports of injuries.

Emergency personnel are working at the scene and train service in the area has been suspended, according to the governor.

There have previously been reports of sabotage against the railways in Russia and Belarus during the year or so that the war has been going on. However, no attack on this scale has previously been confirmed by Russian officials.

Images of a burning train lying in the grass next to the track can be seen on social media.

According to the state railway company, the incident occurred on Monday at 10:17 a.m. local time, between the town of Unetya and the community of Rassukha in the western parts of Bryansk, about ten kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

According to the company, the locomotive and seven wagons derailed “after intervention by unauthorized persons”. The fire was extinguished a little over two hours after the incident, according to the data.

Aleksandr Drozdenko, governor of the Leningrad region, said on Monday that power lines were blown up in northern Russia, in what the FSB security service called an “act of sabotage”. The incident is said to have occurred near the town of Susanino, approximately six miles south of St. Petersburg.
