It happens again and again that movies subsequently edited and modified become. The reasons for this vary. Sometimes an effect is outdated and gets an upgrade, sometimes scenes that no longer fit the zeitgeist are removed. Steven Spielberg also lent a hand with one of his films.
In 2002, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of ET the Extra-Terrestrial, Spielberg created a new version of the sci-fi classic. One of the most striking changes concerns the government officials’ weapons – they were completely removed. Instead, radios are used in the chase at the end.

As Deadline reports, Spielberg recently commented on the ET change at the Time’s 100 Summit. Looking back, he regrets itto have made this incision in his work.
That was a mistake. I should never have done that. ET is a product of its time. No film should be reworked based on the way we see it today, either voluntarily or by force.

Additionally, Spielberg explains why he changed the scene back then in the first place. He could not imagine that officials attacking children with guns.
ET was a film where I was sensitive to the fact that the agents would go straight at kids with guns, so I turned the guns into walkie-talkies. But over the past few years, I’ve changed my mind.
