German Pediatricians Association (BVKJ) Spokesperson Jakob Maske, in his statement to the German press, stated that the deficiency in certain drugs is increasing in Germany, and there is a lack of antibiotics given to children in particular.
“This means that children who really need antibiotics are sometimes not given antibiotics.” Mask, said that the situation is worrying as there is not enough antibiotics available to sick children at the moment.
Mask noted that this situation affects both rural and urban areas equally.
Explaining that many children need antibiotics every day due to diseases such as lung and severe ear infections, Maske stated that he has never seen such a shortage of antibiotics in Germany. The mask called on the German Ministry of Health to resolve problems with the supply of medicines as soon as possible.
Mask, who wants hospitals not to be affected by this situation, “Otherwise, children will die or serious complications that we have not seen before will occur.” warned.
LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN IMPORT ANTIBIOTIC CONTAINING SYRUPS
Ministry of Health Spokesperson Sebastian Gülde, at the press conference held in Berlin, stated that there are mechanisms to take action regarding the supply bottleneck in medicines, and that the early warning system on this issue will be further expanded with a newly prepared draft law.
Pointing out that the Ministry of Health has previously announced that there is a shortage in syrups containing antibiotics for children, Gülde noted that this way, local authorities will be able to act more flexibly against the supply bottleneck and have the opportunity to import the said antibiotic syrups.
