Sony finished the first quarter of 2023 at a high level. It reported a record operating profit of €8.1 billion, beating its own estimate. Sony estimates sales to be around €8 billion for the next fiscal year ending March 2024.
Much of this success is thanks to outstanding PlayStation 5 sales. Sony sold 19.1 million consoles in the fiscal year. It sold 11.5 million consoles in the previous fiscal year, marred by supply chain issues. Sony hopes to sell 25 million this fiscal year (by March 2024).
Sony’s gaming division reported revenue of €24.3 billion. The other big winner for Sony was the chip division. Sony’s image sensor business generated revenues of €1.4 billion, up 36% year on year.
However, Sony expects its imaging chip business to decline by 5.7% in the current fiscal year mainly due to slowing demand from Chinese smartphone makers.
