Tilbury man charged with second degree murder after man found dead

A 32-year-old Tilbury man is facing a second-degree murder charge after Chatham-Kent police found the body of a missing man in a Tilbury residence.

Police said the matter began as a missing investigation on April 19 when it was reported the victim, Daniel Marchand, 45, of Tilbury, was last seen on April 15.

The major crime unit took over the investigation which brought officers to a Dufferin Avenue residence in Tilbury on Wednesday where Marchand was found dead, police said.

The coroner’s office was contacted and commenced a death investigation, police said.

An autopsy was completed Thursday with the preliminary cause of death being ruled a homicide, police said.

Ken Baylis, of Tilbury, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Wednesday where a publication ban was issued prohibiting details and evidence from being published during the pre-trial phase.

Baylis was remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on May 5.

“The Chatham-Kent police wish to advise the public this is an isolated incident; there is no information to suggest members of the public were at risk,” police said in a media release.

Police also expressed their condolences to the family of Marchand.

The investigation continues to be active and police ask if anyone has information in relation to this homicide to contact Det. Cole Abbott at [email protected] or by phone at 519-436-6600 ext. 262. Anonymous calls can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477..
