Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the greatest actors of our time. His films include century films such as Titanic, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island or the Tarantino masterpiece Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Today there is an epic with the star on TV that is easy to forget with such a filmography: The Man in the Iron Mask.
On TV: Epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio based on true horror story
The film is loosely based on Alexandre Dumas’ D’Artagnan trilogy, which includes The Three Musketeers. In The Man in the Iron Mask, the three musketeers Athos (John Malkovich), Porthos (Gérard Depardieu) and Aramis (Jeremy Irons) together with D’Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne) face off against the French king Louis XIV (DiCaprio). They free his twin brother (also DiCaprio), whom the cruel ruler had imprisoned and forced into secrecy to wear an iron mask.
What sounds like the pipe dream of an imaginative author is actually based on true events. As can be read on History.com, among others, there was indeed a mysterious prisoner in French prisons at the end of the 18th century who wore a mask all the time. His identity has not been clarified beyond doubt. It may have been an Italian nobleman who had tried to deceive Louis XIV.
When will The Man in the Iron Mask be on TV?
The man in the iron mask is running this Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 8:15 p.m. on Servus TV. Directed by Randall Wallace (We Were Heroes, screenplay for Braveheart).
