It was stated that Tunisia appointed an ambassador to Damascus again after 11 years. Here are the details of the news…
According to a written statement from the Tunisian Presidency, President Kays Said appointed Mohammed al-Muhezzebi as the “extraordinary” Ambassador to Damascus and the plenipotentiary representative of Tunisia in Syria, at a ceremony held at the Carthage Palace.
The appointment in question came after the visit of Faisal al-Mikdad, the Foreign Minister of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, to Tunisia on 17-19 April.
During the said visit, Mikdad announced that his country plans to appoint an ambassador to Tunisia.
President Said, during his meeting with Mikdad on April 18, stated that they wanted relations with Syria and bilateral cooperation to return to their normal course.
DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH SYRIA WERE DISCONTINUED 11 YEARS AGO
Tunisia broke off diplomatic relations with Syria 11 years ago in response to the Assad regime’s violent suppression of the popular uprisings that erupted in the country with the Arab Spring.
Former Tunisian President Munsif al-Merzuki decided in 2012 to expel the Syrian Ambassador to Tunisia.
Tunisia returned to limited diplomatic representation with Syria in 2017, and air traffic between the two countries resumed at the end of 2018.
In a statement made by the Tunisian Presidency on February 9, it was stated that President Kays Said wanted to raise the level of diplomatic representation in Syria. In the statement made on April 4, it was announced that President Said had ordered the initiation of proceedings for the appointment of an ambassador to Syria. (AA)
