Ex-Bungie employee opens up about secret project designed to use the Unreal Engine

The Guardians in Destiny 2 are currently dreaming of a bug-free loot shooter on the latest generation Unreal Engine. But why only dream? A former employee and some job descriptions have long indicated that this is not so unlikely.

Is Destiny 2 looking better than ever? Maybe not Destiny 2. But it’s becoming increasingly likely for Bungie’s new and still secretive project. At least if you believe the information that has been revealed on the net.

  • A new IP should take over Destiny 2’s free-to-play model.
  • The focus should be on competitive gaming and thus PvP.
  • In job postings, the requirement “Experience with Unreal Engine 4, 5, Unity3D or other modern development toolsets”.

    • And now, a former employee has posted on his profile that at Bungie he “led the effort to build a larger prototype [für ein neues Spiel] in unreal [Engine] to build”.

    Where does the information come from? It has long been known that developer Bungie, creator of the Halo and Destiny franchises, has been working with Sony on one or more ambitious projects for quite some time.

    Several job postings point to a new PvP game from Bungie, now the LinkedIn profile of former creative director, Robert Engeln, has again revealed more information.

    While the former employee didn’t provide full details, there are still rumors in the community that Bungie’s prototype IP could hint at an all-new PvP game that players should be excited about.

  • For example, Engeln worked at Bungie from 2017 to 2019 on development for a new game and IP, and led efforts to “create a more extensive prototype in the Unreal [Engine] to create.”
  • Between 2019 and 2020 he was jointly responsible for project management for the new IP and “creating a robust prototype and accompanying the project through the green light process”.

    • Bungie could actually rely on the latest Unreal Engine for the ongoing development of its upcoming games.

    What is the Unreal Engine? Unreal Engine 5 is currently one of the most advanced gaming engines. Developed by Epic Games, which Bungie already works with, it has since become one of the leading engines in the gaming industry.

    It not only offers developers a variety of tools and features to create games, but also a powerful 3D rendering engine, an advanced physics engine and a sophisticated animation system.

    This makes it possible to render extremely detailed 3D models in real time without having to compromise on performance. The end result is a realistic and immersive gaming experience that blurs the lines between reality and virtuality.

    With the use of this engine, the creator of Destiny 2 would rely on the latest and most modern technology and make the eyes of the guardians shine.

    • At least the wait would be worth it: For now, though, that’s little consolation for Destiny 2 players. Because Destiny, Bungie’s current game, is struggling with more and more errors, which players speculately attribute to the old and outdated Tiger engine.
