The German constitutional protection agency BFV classifies the party AFD’s youth association as a “confirmed” extremist organization. This means that the German security service will have increased powers to monitor the youth association.
Germany’s Federal Authority for the Protection of the German Constitution (BFV) announces that the decision was made after four years of review by the group.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AFD) youth union is outspokenly xenophobic and can be assumed to act in a non-peaceful manner against people perceived as foreign, the statement said.
The youth association has already previously been classified as “suspected” extremist, which gave the security service the right to, for example, monitor the group with secret wiretapping and infiltrators. The new labeling gives the security service even greater leeway.
The parent party AFD was classified as “suspected” extremist in 2021, but the measure was rejected in an administrative court in Cologne. The AFD has been in the German Bundestag since 2017 and is currently the third largest party according to some opinion polls.
