With its version KB5025305, Windows 11 adds an option in Windows Update to receive system updates as soon as they are available. An interesting function for those who do not want to wait!
Definitely, we will not understand anything about the Windows 11 update policy! Just days after releasing its April 2023 Patch Tuesday – its set of monthly patches, which pose several issues this time around (see our article) – Microsoft has quietly released a new update for its latest explanation system. Rolled out on April 25, 2023 and stamped KB5025305, it’s officially referred to as Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based systems: a nebulous appellation – why “preview”? – that the publisher seems to be using from more and more often without anyone understanding why – yet another of the mysteries of Microsoft’s somewhat confusing strategy on the evolution of Windows 11 (see our “rant” article). this unexpected update comes with its small batch of bug fixes, but also with a surprise option.
In fact, once KB5025305 has been installed – a fairly complete operation that requires restarting the PC – the Windows Update window is enriched at the top with a new section, in the area Options. Title “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available”, it is accompanied by a switch to activate – or not! And as its caption explains quite clearly, it helps to be among the first to automatically grab Windows 11 updates, fixes, and non-security related enhancements.
A confirmed explanation on a special Microsoft page : “We are committed to providing continuous innovation by releasing new features and enhancements in Windows 11 more frequently. related to safety via several maintenance technologies, in particular the Controlled Feature Deployment (CFR). With this approach, updates can be gradually rolled out to devices.”
Several things to remember in this jargon speech. First, that Microsoft assumes its continuous improvement of Windows 11, thus justifying the increasingly high frequency of updates – and at the same time, their disorderly publications… Second, that these updates are based on several techniques . Last but not least, that they are personalized thanks to a “function control system”. Clearly, not everyone is entitled to the same versions at the same time, which we had already noticed during recent major deployments.
It would therefore seem that Microsoft now offers the possibility to those who wish to have the latest Windows 11 updates in priority with versions adapted to their PC. Good news for impatient people who love discovering new things without waiting, even if it means trying a few plasters. But this function being deactivated by default and the fact that it in no way obscures the security updates which remain priority and essential, the others will not be harmed. All you have to do is activate it if you are one of the impatient curious!
