Thousands of salamanders are now being forced to move in front of Volvo’s planned battery factory outside Mariestad in Västergötland. And the number of water salamanders in the area astounds biologists, Vetenskapsradion reports.
Over 10,500 salamanders have so far been found during a month’s relocation work, which is significantly more than expected.
Water salamanders are a strictly protected species and were found in the area when plans to build the factory were raised.
Even the breeding areas and resting places of the lizard-like amphibian are protected and the only solution to be able to build the factory is to move the animals completely.
The factory, which is located in a grove of trees with a pond, houses the species larger newts and it is they who get a new home in newly built ponds.
Other species in the area will also be moved to the new ponds, including dragonflies.
