Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon G3x a SoC tailored for portable

Qualcomm and the game, it’s a rolling story. Just think of the Snapdragon 730G, 768G, or even the most recent 780G to be convinced. However, during its Snapdragon Summit, which is currently taking place in Hawaii, Qualcomm strongly reaffirmed its intentions in the field of video games.

The Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 is a platform designed for portable gaming, so that potential manufacturers can offer consoles, similar to the Switch, from Nintendo (which uses an ARM chip from Nvidia), or the Steam Deck, from Valve. .

To be honest, this SoC would be cut to run Android games, but also stream games from a console or a PC, or even to access a game service in the Cloud.

At the heart of the platform, we find the G3x, which embeds an Adreno graphics part, similar to that found in current high-end smartphones, and which allows you to play at 144 images per second, in HDR (10 bit). The chip is also powerful enough to handle a 4K screen, or even a mixed reality headset, connected to USB-C.

Also to discover in video:

To complete this graphic part, Qualcomm has integrated its audio technologies, grouped under the name Snapdragon Sound. This will be particularly useful for listening to music through headphones.

The modem part is also neat, since there is a 5G sub-6 GHz and 5G millimeter compatibility. The future of nomadic gaming goes through this. For local connections, the SoC is compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, which is coming soon to our regions.

So that this platform is not a simple technical demonstration without tomorrow, Qualcomm has teamed up with Razer, known for its hardware and its gaming PCs. The two actors built functional prototypes. They are available for interested developers. These development kits therefore include the G3x, a 6.65-inch (120 Hz) OLED screen and a 5 Mpix webcam, to be able to stream his face, triumphant or defeated.

Qualcomm does not give a release date for any consoles using its G3x: the ball seems to be in the court of the developers, and of possible partners.
