UFC-Que-Choisir is sounding the alarm: many everyday products, especially for babies, still contain bisphenols that are potentially dangerous to health.
You must have already heard of bisphenol A (BPA): this chemical substance, long used to manufacture plastic objects (packaging, for example), was banned in France in 2015. And for good reason: BPA is a disruptive endocrine which can promote the appearance of cancer in humans.
But did you know? In the family of bisphenols, there is not only BPA: there is also bisphenol B (in certain resins, in certain varnishes, in certain plastics…), bisphenol F (in certain packaging, in particular food ) or bisphenol S (idem).
Bisphenols are probably toxic to humans
These chemical substances are probably toxic to humans: thus, in a report published in 2021, ANSES established that bisphenol B “meets all the hazard criteria to be defined as an endocrine disruptor“. And a French study published in 2015 affirms that bisphenols S and F do not constitute “safe alternatives to bisphenol A“.
Yes, but here it is: according to a recent survey by UFC-que-Choisir, bisphenols are still widely used in everyday products, and in particular in products intended for babies – teething rings, water bottles, tights, food packaging. ..
This Wednesday, April 19, 2023, the UFC-que-Choisir therefore requested a ban on all bisphenols “in the most risky everyday products“: “[il est] scandalous that too many manufacturers have not yet taken measures commensurate with the potential risks induced by these compounds. (…) The ability of endocrine disruptors to act at very low doses would justify a ban even at trace levels” To be continued…
