JosephStart was the writer and design director responsible for Destiny 1’s horrific launch failure 10 years ago, and then went on to work on Halo Infinite at Microsoft. Now the 51-year-old is to develop a new hammer game for Netflix, which will apparently be released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
What does Joseph Staten have to do with Destiny?
New AAA game for Netflix with mystery and adventure
This is his job at Netflix now: Staten has now announced that he’s joining Netflix as “Creative Director” working on a brand new AAA game for multiple platforms — typically in the West, “multiplatform” means something like “PC, PS5, Xbox Series X.” . The game is intended to establish a “new IP”, i.e. a new game universe.
He also says:
In my working life, there’s nothing I love more than collaborating with others to build a world filled with iconic characters, deep puzzles, and endless adventures.
Netflix is apparently making a major first person shooter in the Unreal Engine
What does Netflix have to do with gaming? There are around 50 games on Netflix, most of which are indie games. But job postings were spotted in November 2022 that suggested Netflix was looking for a design director to develop a PC game using the Unreal Engine, apparently a first-person shooter (via kotaku).
It’s quite possible that Staten is now working on this title for Netflix. At least that would fit his previous work.
Alongside series and films, gaming could become an important mainstay for Netflix, which recently had to give up feathers in the fight for the top streaming service.
What was Staten’s problem with Destiny back then? To this day, that is not entirely clear. Destiny’s original story revolved around abstract concepts such as light, darkness, and hope.
Apparently, sometime in 2013, Destiny got to the point where the Destiny executives decided that such a story didn’t lend itself to a multi-million dollar shooter project and then turned it into a relatively muddled SF story that didn’t have time to explain, why you don’t have time to explain something. For years, as a result of this reboot, Destiny grappled with a story that not even those responsible really understood:
