508.7 million, or half a billion dollars generated at the worldwide box office in just 9 days of operation, the animated film Super Mario Bros is driving the counters crazy and continues to break records. Super Mario Bros The Movie thus becomes the biggest success of 2023 (ahead of Ant-Man and the Quantumania Wasp), but also turns out to be the most lucrative video game adaptation in history, surpassing Warcraft (439 million dollars), Detective Pikachu ($433 million), and Rampage ($428 million). In France, the film has already exceeded 3 million spectators at the end of its second weekend. This colossal commercial success is also a revenge for Universal and Illumination, which had undoubtedly been disconcerted by the returns of the press in the world, disappointed that the film was only a chain of fan-service during the 92 minutes (credits including included) that counts the film. Many of these disappointed journalists (and we are part of the lot) had hoped for a more interesting development of the lore, but in the end, the feature film will only be a succession of sketches stuffed with references.
This success ensures a sequel, with no doubt the character of Yoshi, teased at the end of the film during the second post-credits scene, with we hope more depth, less haste and a longer duration.
