The Wall Street Journal’s reporter Evan Gershkovich appeared on Tuesday in a Moscow court to have his arrest appeal heard, writes The Guardian. Gershkovich, who was placed behind a glass wall in the courtroom, did not say anything in court, according to the newspaper.

Evan Gershkovich was arrested at the end of March in Yekaterinburg, Russia, accused of spying on behalf of the United States. He faces 20 years in prison if convicted.

The Wall Street Journal reporter is the first American correspondent since the Cold War to be detained in Russia on alleged espionage charges.

The arrest has been met with strong condemnation from the international community.
