A 13-year-old faces charges after an officer was struck in the face and seriously injured, St Thomas police say.

Officers began a search Thursday for two youths who were reported missing and determined there were grounds to apprehend them under the Mental Health Act, St. Thomas police said Friday.

An officer found the two youths downtown about 10:40 am Thursday and tried to reconnect them with their families, police said.

One youth struck the officer in the face, police said. The officer was treated for serious injuries in hospital and released.

While in custody, the youth threatened ”to kill all officers” involved and spat in another officer’s face, police said.

A 13-year-old youth, who can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with assault causing bodily harm, resisting a peace officer, assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, police said. The youth was released pending a court appearance.
