New measures against automobile pollution in the United States

The US government’s plan has a very clear aim: to ensure that two thirds of the cars sold in the country in 2032 are electric.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed Wednesday, April 12 to drastically reduce emissions from new vehicles. Objective: to reduce average annual pollution by 13%. It is the most demanding proposal to date in the United States.

The US government’s plan has a very clear aim: to ensure that two thirds of the cars sold in the country in 2032 are electric.

To achieve this, car manufacturers must theoretically produce 67% of electric vehicles by 2032. A significant figure when only 6% of American vehicles sold last year were electric.

The US administration wants to progressively restrict the amount of emissions produced. It remains for manufacturers to choose between several technologies: to lighten their vehicles, improve their engines or even change particulate filters.

If the new rules are respected, CO2 emissions could be reduced by almost 10 billion tonnes until 2055. For environmentalists, this will also reduce fuel costs and oil imports.

However, several difficulties appear: the reduced quantity of available raw materials such as lithium or the limited number of charging stations. But also standards that can evolve with each political change… Which makes it difficult for companies to organize themselves over the long term.
