The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan is a hell of a bet for French cinema. A great show, a well-known cast, hectic action scenes, everything is in place to bring spectators back to theaters and, perhaps, create a new dynamic in the production of the French seventh art.
In this first part of Three Musketeers, we follow the young D’Artagnan, ready to do anything to join the body of the King’s Musketeers and the band of Athos, Porthos and Aramis. He finds himself having to thwart the plot of the Cardinal Richelieu and the mysterious Milady de Winter in an intrigue well known to readers, that of the queen’s studs. The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan is the first part of the diptych directed by Martin Bourboulon. The work of Alexandre Dumas being particularly dense, it was chosen to adapt it in two films. But let the spectators be reassured, The three Musketeers: Milady only comes out a few months after the first, and was even shot at the same time. It will be possible to see this part 2 at the cinema on December 13, 2023.
What will happen in the second part of the Three Musketeers ? Readers of Alexandre Dumas’ novel know that the siege of La Rochelle awaits our protagonists in the continuation of their adventures and that d’Artagnan goes in search of Constance. We will also learn more about the past of Milady de Winter (Eva Green). Those unfamiliar with Dumas’ story, however, will have to wait until the film’s release in December to find out the plot details.
If successful, the diptych of Three Musketeers could be entitled to two sequels in the form of films. These would be adaptations of twenty years later and Viscount of Bragelonne, two novels by Alexandre Dumas which follows the descendants of the children of the Musketeers, and which addresses the question of the man in the iron mask. For the time being, we do not know if these films are in the works or their possible release dates.
Two series derived from Three Musketeers are also being considered for broadcast on Disney+. One would be called Milady Origins and would return to the past of the character played by Eva Green. The second, Black Musketeer, will return to the character of Hannibal, the first black musketeer. On Allociné, a character named Hannibal is indicated in the casting of Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan And Milady, with Ralph Amoussou who interprets it.
