Region Kalmar County and Västervik Municipality are behind the detailed plan. The plan includes new hospital premises that could be four times the size of the current ones.
Today, existing buildings, including the new psychiatry under construction, cover approximately 25,000 square meters. The expansion of the area is to be divided into ten stages and corresponds to new construction of approximately 98,000 square meters.
– The detailed plan contains the largest reconstruction and new construction in one and the same area that we have had in Västervik for many years. The work is very complex with, among other things, the impact of the buildings on the city skyline and the national interest in cultural environmental protection, says Marcus Åberg, planning architect at Västervik municipality.
The old detailed plan is not sufficient
The detailed plan also includes an adaptation of the premises for the Ellen Key School on the condition that the municipality and the region can agree on a takeover of the school building.
In 2019, the decision was made that a new detailed plan would be drawn up for the hospital area because the current one was not sufficient to meet the development needs of the area.
