The police classify the dog attacks in Malmö as destruction. It is a public-dangerous crime directed against animals or plants. The classification is used when a large or indefinite circle may be damaged as a result of poisoning, the spread of dangerous diseases and the like.
The penalty scale for destruction ranges from fines up to two years in prison, for serious crimes from half a year in prison up to six years.
The police in Malmö keep statistics on reports of destruction from January 2021, but the first cases of dog poop were discovered at the end of 2020.
Since January 2021, approximately 160 notifications have been made. A majority of them involve bread buns with baked-in metal or glass pieces. There have also been sausages, meatballs and other meat products where staples, small nails and the like have been inserted.
A small part of the reports are about other things, on the other hand, according to the police, there is a dark story. This is known because additional cases have been credibly described in posts on social media, without any police report being made.
