Israeli warplanes attacked targets in Syria early Sunday after a total of six rockets were fired from Syria at Israel during the evening and night. A total of six rockets were fired from Syria, first three on Saturday night and then another three on Sunday night. The Israeli military said overnight that the strikes were met with artillery fire at the areas in Syria from which the rockets were fired. Early Sunday morning, the military said warplanes attacked military facilities in Syria, including a radar and artillery emplacement. A Damascus-based Palestinian group loyal to the Syrian regime claimed responsibility for Saturday’s rocket fire from Syria, Beirut-based al-Mayadeen television reported. The rocket attack from Syria comes after several days of escalating violence on several fronts as the situation has been tense in Jerusalem and since Israeli police on Wednesday in a nighttime raid used tear gas and fired rubber-coated bullets at Muslims who barricaded themselves in the al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites places. The first three rockets were launched late on Saturday. “One of the rockets entered Israeli territory and struck an open area in the southern Golan Heights,” the Israeli military announced, adding that the rocket did not cause any damage. In the second rocket fire, on the night of Sunday, two of the rockets crossed the border with Israel. One was shot down and the other landed on undeveloped land, according to the Israeli military. There are no reports of people being injured or killed by the rockets. Israel’s military says it responded to rocket fire from Syria during the evening and night with artillery fire. Archive image.
