Seasons have kept Diablo 3 alive for over 10 years – fans debate whether Diablo 4 needs them too

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

For Diablo 4, seasons and how Blizzard developed them in their new Hack&Slay are important. Some demonize the system, others appreciate it. We’ll show you if Diablo really needs 4 Seasons.

What are Seasons in Diablo? Seasons were implemented in Diablo 3 and are considered endgame content. Each season runs for 3 months and, depending on the theme, offers new mechanics or legendaries that enable new builds. Cosmetic items such as pets, portraits and other things then wave as rewards. In order to participate in Seasons, however, you must create a Season Hero and raise it again to its Max Level (via diablo3.blizzard.com).

Many Diablo fans celebrate the system behind the seasons, but there are also players who don’t like it. Now there is a wild debate as to whether Diablo 4 needs the same system or whether the game could live without it.

Players know: Without Seasons, Diablo would be finished

Why are Seasons so cool? While some players don’t understand the system behind Seasons, long-time Diablo 3 fans know what they’re there for – making sure Diablo doesn’t die out. Reddit user rustang2 aptly describes the intention behind the seasons:

Don’t you season haters realize that many players destroy the content and then leave the game, seasons keep bringing them back and keeping player counts high. Without that, the support for the game would be much lower and less content would be released for everyone.

Basically, the Seasons are a breath of fresh air in the meta in the three months they’ve been out. Each player starts from scratch and can then work their way up the leaderboard. Despite this, some fans cannot get used to the mechanics behind it.

They’d rather keep playing the hero they started with and still try out new content than having to create a new hero every few months. According to the comments on Reddit, Diablo 4 needs the Seasons to survive.

What will Seasons look like in Diablo 4? Seasons should have the same duration and system as in Diablo 3. A new theme or mechanic appears every three months to bring a breath of fresh air. Additionally, in order to participate in the Season, you must create a Season Hero.

This time, however, there are also Season Passes that players can purchase to unlock cosmetic items for their classes. However, it is not yet known how the Season Pass is linked to the actual season and whether you have to play a season in order to make progress.

What do you think of the Seasons in Diablo 4? Would you rather see them scrapped entirely and Blizzard bring more content through their Season Pass, or can’t you even imagine Diablo without Seasons? Let’s find out in the comments!
