It was destined to be a total success, cut to be one of the most appreciated films by the public, but also by the press, but Super Mario Bros The Movie failed in its task. The (late) lifting of the critical embargo will undoubtedly disconcert many, since press feedback is far from unanimous. As of this writing, the Super Mario Bros. movie has an average rating of 48% on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic, the shower is also cold with a Metascore of 49%. On all the opinions of the journalists, there are obviously good reviews, but also many negative opinions, and what is reproached above all to the footage, it is to say nothing unfortunately. With its duration of 92 min (1h22 of film if we remove the end credits), the film is short, too short, and above all it tries to place as many things as possible in record time. In fact, the film goes a thousand miles an hour, rushes each sequence and never takes the time to rest, if only for contemplation. This obsessive need to rush what little story there is totally ruins the film.

At Télérama, we regret the 1993 live-action film with these words: “We come to regret the strange chaos of the first film, from 1993, which propelled the Mario brothers into a punk dystopia. It was a public and critical failure. Thirty years later, Nintendo no longer takes risks and offers a conventional film .” At Sud-Ouest, on the other hand, we enjoyed the show quite well and it is described as follows: “Admittedly, we therefore cannot escape a sometimes gratuitous compilation effect, but the pace is so frantic that we have no time to get bored if we know at least the universe, the lore of the Nintendo’s mascot.” If Super Mario Bros The Movie disappointed the profession for the most part, it is on the other hand the public who will obviously decide the fate of the film, and something tells us that the latter will be receptive and will make the film a real popular and commercial success. .
