02/06/22 – 23:15 – Thank you
Thank you all for having followed the live commentary of the final of the African Cup of Nations which will have seen Senegal win the first CAN in its history. And thank you for accompanying us during this month of competition. See you in a year for the next edition in Côte d’Ivoire.
02/06/22 – 11:10 p.m. – The Senegalese star
It was the perfect denouement, the climax of a skillfully written drama. A few moments earlier, Edouard Mendy had blocked Lasheen’s attempt and offered him the most beautiful position, the heaviest too. A duel with this demon Gabaski, a duel with history. With a confident step, Sadio Mané advanced towards his destiny, put down his ball and took a long run up. The Senegalese striker rushed forward and crossed his shot with all his might. As if propelled by all the hopes of the Senegalese people, the ball came to lodge in the small net, out of reach of the Egyptian goalkeeper, short of miracles. In an indescribable atmosphere, Mané opened his arms and saw his teammates jump on him. After two lost finals, Senegal finally became African champions. On his bench, Aliou Cissé exulted, him the unfortunate actor of the original Senegalese football final, lost in similar circumstances after the penalty shootout against Cameroon. But fate did not seem in the mood to repeat itself and the generation of Mané, Koulibaly and Mendy was determined to write a new page in the history of African football.
And it is an understatement to say that it will have taken determination and moral strength to overcome this poisonous Egypt, which will have foiled all or almost all of its opponents during this AFCON, before cracking at the last moment, in the penalty shootout exercise, the very one where she had disgusted Ivorians and then Cameroonians. We thought, moreover, that everything was going to begin again. Setting fire from the first minutes, the Senegalese obtained a flagrant penalty when Ciss was mowed down by Abdelmonem. Mané then presented himself against Gabaski but forgot the essential, relying only on strength alone, without thinking about precision. The Senegalese star hit hard but did not cross enough and the Egyptian goalkeeper, who started on the right side, diverted. We had been playing for 6 minutes, the start of the show. Because the hero of the 8th round and the semi-final, decisive host of the quarter, was still going to deliver a high-flying match. Little requested in first, he nevertheless saw the Lions of Teranga rush to his goal and multiply the crosses without them finding takers as when Sarr tumbled and Mané, again him, could not regain the ball, the fault of a capricious rebound. Passing on the sides and hurting with each acceleration, the Senegalese dominated the debates but without managing to get to safety and it took all the vigilance of Mendy to get out of a tap Salah’s sudden strike before the break.
Started at a high pace, the final gradually changed in appearance. The tension became more and more significant as the minutes passed, making the game of the Egyptians so comfortable in these conditions. The entries of Zizo, Trezeguet and Marwan transformed the face of the Pharaohs who obtained the two best chances of the second act with first of all a header from Abdelmonem above following a free kick from Zizo, then on a header too uncrossed by Marwan at the reception of a cross from El Fotouh at 6 meters. Unable to decide between themselves, the teams embarked on a perilous extension. Already valuable in several hot situations, Gabaski did wonders with a first parade on a tumble from Dieng, deliciously launched by Mané. Shortly after, we found the two men for a new exploit by the Egyptian who, from the end of his gloves, pulled out the perfectly uncrossed head of the Olympique de Marseille striker. In the second period of extra time, Dieng again tried from a distance but his powerful and floating shot came up against the impassable Gabaski. In the process, Mendy responded to his vis-à-vis following an axial attempt by Marwan. The last firecrackers before the big fireworks and the fateful session. Abdelmonem missed the first curling his attempt on the post, before Bouna Sarr made Gabaski shine. Then Mendy blocked Lasheen’s shot. The Mané suite took care to write it with a bang, echoing his failure earlier in the evening. The Senegalese then let drunkenness win them over and ventured into joyful dance steps, finally invited to share the table with the “greats” of Africa.
02/06/22 – 11:05 p.m. – Mané, best CAN player
